SUMMARY
Works onboard watercraft, such as barges, crew boats, push boats, and tug boats by performing the following duties.
*TWIC card required, or ability to obtain in 90 days.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Handles lines to moor vessel to wharves, tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig towing lines.
Sweeps and washes decks, and performs general housekeeping duties.
Stands steering watches or lookout watches while underway.
Moves controls or turns handwheels to tighten/loosen push cables.
Loads or unloads material from barges and boats.
Paints decks and superstructure of vessel.
Lubricates machinery and equipment.
Assists with performing maintenance of the vessel including caring for tools and equipment.
Splices and repairs cables and ropes.
Examines cables that holds vessels in tow and tightens cables to ensure vessels are snug.
Works in a safe and responsible manner at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to follow directions.
Handle lines to moor vessels.
Handle basic hand tools, such as hammer, wrench, bar, ax, razor knife, etc.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Minimum 6 months related experience and/or training.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
TWIC card required, or ability to obtain in 90 days.
Merchant Mariner and Able-Bodied Seaman credentials preferred.

The employee must regularly work or walk on uneven ground or onboard floating equipment. Access and egress to barges, boats and piers requires ability to do so from moving surfaces due to water motion. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works on floating equipment and outside in marine weather conditions on a daily basis. The work environment is on barges and boats operating on bays and other tributaries. Accessing the work site may require climbing from barges and boats when they are at different levels above the water. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high places. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
