Description

Corman Kokosing Construction Company, leading heavy highway, bridge, and utility contractor in the Mid-Atlantic region, has an opening for an Equipment Operator with the ability to run multiple kinds of equipment (Excavator/Loader/Dozer).  .

SUMMARY
Excavator
- *REQUIRED; Operates power driven excavator, equipped with movable shovel, to excavate or move dirt, rock, sand, and other materials by performing the following duties.
Loader - Operates straight or articulated rubber tire tractor or track type vehicle equipped with front mounted hydraulically powered bucket or scoop to lift and transport bulk materials to and from storage, load trucks, backfill trenches, and/or cut out a road by performing the following duties.
DozerOperates tractor equipped with concave blade attached across front to gouge out, level, and distribute earth and to push trees and rocks from land preparatory to constructing roads, pipelines, or bridges by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Checks all fluids before starting engine.  
  • Receives written or oral instructions from supervisor.
  • Performs routine maintenance such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning.
  • Observes and understands markings on ground, hand signals, or grade stakes.
  • Operates equipment in safe and responsible manner.
  • When Operator work is not available, works with and assists crews by performing other duties as requested.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE   
Prior experience in position required. Experience must be commensurate with requirements of Project - will vary depending on project. Minimum five years related experience and/or training.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Understands English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  

REASONING ABILITY 
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Certified or approved by Corman Safety Department or Competent person.
Valid driver's license and good driving record preferred.
Must pass practical test.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The Operator has a physically strenuous and demanding job that requires agility.  When operating equipment, the Operator must be able to climb in and out of the piece of equipment safely.  To climb onto the equipment the Operator uses both hands to grab hold of cab mounted hand grips and raises one foot up to 30 inches (from the ground) onto a step.  Uses arm and leg power to lift his/her body up to the tread of the step.  This process is repeated until the Operator reaches the cab.  The employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The operation of the equipment requires the use of both hands and arms for steering and moving levers and legs to operate foot controls and pedals.  These activities are repeated throughout the work day.  When there is no operator work required, the employee may assist the crew and perform other duties with physical demands. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Construction sites may be in isolated or in high traffic areas around other equipment and workers.
