SUMMARY
Operates power driven excavator, equipped with movable shovel, to excavate or move dirt, rock, sand, and other materials by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Receives written or oral instructions from supervisor regarding material to move or excavate.
2. Pushes levers and depresses pedals to move machine, to lower and push shovel into stockpiled
material, to lower and dig shovel into surface of ground, and to lift, swing, and dump contents of
shovel into truck or stockpile. Must do so in a smooth, controlled manner.
3. Works with pipe on utility jobs. Works safely inside trench box.
4. Works as needed on bridge jobs, moving or placing materials.
5. Observes markings on ground, hand signals, or grade stakes to remove material, when operating
machine at excavation or utility site.
6. Inspects, cleans, maintains, and lubricates equipment.
7. Works in safe and responsible manner.
8. When Operator work is not available, works with and assists crews by performing other duties as
requested.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Prior experience in position required. Experience must be commensurate with requirements of Project - will vary depending on project. Minimum four to ten years related experience and/or training.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Certified or approved by Corman Safety Department, Equipment Manager, or Operations Manager. Licensed as required by local jurisdiction (DC requires operators to be licensed). Must pass practical test.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
The Operator has a physically strenuous and demanding job that requires agility. When operating equipment, the Operator must be able to climb in and out of the piece of equipment safely. To climb onto the equipment the Operator uses both hands to grab hold of cab mounted hand grips and raises one foot up to 30 inches (from the ground) onto a step. Uses arm and leg power to lift his/her body up to the tread of the step. This process is repeated until the Operator reaches the cab. The employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The operation of the equipment requires the use of both hands and arms for steering and moving levers and legs to operate foot controls and pedals. These activities are repeated throughout the work day. When there is no operator work required, the employee may assist the crew and perform other duties with physical demands. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
