SUMMARY 
Supervises and coordinates activities of a field survey party; performs the most technically complex field surveying duties.
This position will cover our Tidewater region (Chesapeake/Norfolk/Newport News/VA Beach)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1.  Reviews documents and plans, making sure all questions are answered, before proceeding 
     with any activities.

2.  Acts as party chief for a field survey crew engaged in making surveys for construction,   
     layout topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects.

3.  Participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, and contractor  
     representatives.

4.  Instructs and trains survey crew in survey and construction layout, use of equipment, and 
     field safety procedures.

5.  Gathers field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System 
     (GPS) methods; sets up, adjusts, and operates survey equipment, including electronic total 
     station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and 
     angles.

6.  Prepares field notes and drawings; and performs field surveying for roadway, bridges, and 
     flood control projects, including installing surveying construction stakes, tying out existing 
     intersection ties, and locating or establishing vertical and horizontal control, right of way, 
     monuments, corners, and boundaries.

7.  Performs complex surveying calculations using engineering calculator, laptop computer, 
     personal computer, and graphics and coordinate geometry (Cogo) software, such as 
     AutoCad-Softdesk and Terramodel.

8.  Maintains field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems.  

9.  Knows crew members by name. Maintains contact list. 

10. Conducts daily “Huddle” with crew: explains in detail the work to be accomplished and how 

       it is to be accomplished; trains inexperienced crew members. 

11.  Interprets company policies to workers. Enforces and abides by Company disciplinary 
       procedures when dealing with employee problems.

12.  Evaluates ongoing safety issues on job and makes changes where necessary. 

13.  Enforces safety regulations and use of Personal Protective Equipment.

14.  Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.

15.  Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and 
       quality of product.

16.  Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of 
        work crew.

17.  Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.

18.  Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.

19.  Maintains time and production records: detailed and accurate time sheets, and detailed 
       locations of work performed.

20.  Time sheets turned in on time.

21.  Keeps job team informed of progress and problems.

22.  Sets up equipment and supervises use.

23.  Performs activities of workers supervised.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 
Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this Crew.  May manage Instrument Operator and Surveyors.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 
Equivalent combination of training, education, and experience in heavy highway, bridge, utility and/or marine construction that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.

LANGUAGE SKILLS 
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.  Principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as used in field survey analysis; technical report writing; and computer assisted surveying applications.

REASONING ABILITY 
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 
Professional Land Surveyor's License Preferred

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to high, precarious places and outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
